Health and Environment meets the demand for training of professionals graduated in health, in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective, aiming at training researchers and managers capable of analyzing the effects of environmental exposures on human health, especially in port regions and oil, and to propose solutions.
In the last decades, the increase in urbanization, industrialization and related activities such as transportation and distribution of goods, have led to profound environmental changes that have increased the exposure of human beings to chemical agents and the consequent damage to the health of individuals.
In this sense, the Program proposes the development of studies and projects whose themes permeate daily problems and alternative innovations considering the risk factors to human health in the oil chain industry and in port work, enabling the generation of knowledge and beneficial practices for the serving the population and for the exercise of health professionals.

RESEARCH LINES 1: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL, SANITARY SURVEILLANCE AND DISEASES IN COASTAL CITIES WITH PORT AND PETROCHEMICAL ACTIVITY
Petroleum derivatives present, in their composition, aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals, substances relatively soluble in water and considered carcinogenic. These compounds can contaminate water sources, air, and soil, and consequently, food. Thus, in this line of research, research projects will be developed in which the theme permeates daily problems (and alternative innovations) of the population and professionals involved with risk factors to human health in the oil chain industry, enabling the generation of knowledge and practices beneficial to the care of the population, professionals, and health services.
RESEARCH LINES 2: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL, SANITARY SURVEILLANCE AND DISEASES IN COASTAL CITIES WITH PORT AND PETROCHEMICAL ACTIVITY
The population of the Baixada Santista metropolitan region is distinguished from other metropolitan regions in the country by its strong interaction with the port and petrochemical activity installed there. This interaction promotes beneficial effects on the economy, as well as providing several environmental and health changes for the population. Thus, there is a need to create specific approaches to health care for these cities. In this context, particular attention should be given to preventive actions in matters of health and work occupation, as well as vulnerability to diseases, mental and behavioral disorders that bring psychosocial risk not only to workers involved in these economic activities, but also to the population. In addition, health and epidemiological surveillance actions in these cities are essential for the early diagnosis of health problems as well as for the planning of effective actions that can guarantee the quality of life and health promotion. Thus, approaches related to health and the risks involved, are approached, and investigated along this line involving different research projects, with the objective of seeking alternatives for conduct resulting from research methods with reliable and applicable bases.
RESEARCH LINES 3: HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT STRATEGIES ON QUALITY OF LIFE (UNDER DEVELOPMENT – STRATEGIC PLAN OF THE PROGRAM):
Santos has one of the best qualities of life for seniors. On the other hand, in certain regions of Santos, we have low rates of human development that require research subsidies to improve the quality of life. The line of research comprises aspects of human health and the environment for maintaining and improving the quality of life, considering factors such as health, sport, socioenvironmental and health and environment policies. This line will address health and environment parameters for assessing and developing technologies and processes to improve quality of life.
